The domestic service sector requires most specialists to be able to work as part of a team.
For example, this applies to roles such as a newborn nanny, since infants require round-the-clock attention and care.
Newborn nannies typically work in shifts. Shifts may range from 2 to 14 days. It is crucial that each nanny understands that she and her partner have a shared goal — the child’s health, safety and development. Accordingly, when handing over the shift, the nanny must provide her colleague with all necessary information. Parents often introduce a unified “code of care” and require nannies to maintain a shared daily log. It records all schedule-related details and any changes in the baby’s health, including even minor deviations in wellbeing, if observed. The nanny coming on duty should arrive in advance to take over the shift and receive updates. This usually takes 30–60 minutes.
Practically the same principles apply when a nanny-educator works in shifts.
A governess may also work in rotation with a partner. She records information about the child’s progress, reports on developmental activities, and any other details useful for the colleague who takes over.
Governesses frequently accompany children on overseas trips. Work hours during travel are generally shared evenly, and the shifts may be longer than when working in Kyiv.
A family chef often works on a rota basis as well. He transfers the shift to his colleague by sharing information about the menu served during his duty period. Typically, the family chef uses nearly all groceries purchased so the next chef can shop according to their own planned menu. Additionally, the chef must leave the kitchen spotless after thorough cleaning.
In most cases, a carer also works in pairs. She maintains a health log, noting any changes in condition, the family doctor’s recommendations, prescribed treatments and medical procedures performed. The carer must ensure a clean environment and proper care of the client’s belongings.
When handing over a shift, a housekeeper or maid must complete all assigned tasks and pass on any ongoing duties. For example, which items were sent to dry cleaning or repair, upcoming plans of the household members, and tasks expected from the housekeeper based on those plans. The incoming colleague should be aware of all instructions and preferences expressed by the employers to ensure consistent service.
Private households that require continuous support may hire domestic couples to work in alternating shifts. Each domestic couple must complete the full range of duties and hand over the home and grounds to the next shift in immaculate condition.
Nearly all private household security guards work in shifts — typically 24-hour duty followed by three days off, or another rotation schedule. A guard must have the opportunity to rest during the shift if working around the clock, therefore several guards are usually scheduled per shift.
The task of the employer or the estate manager/household manager is to properly organise working hours, rest time and the shift handover process.
